Cookout

AIChE at Armour College Cookout

September 15, 2009 marked the fall 2009 Armour College Cookout. Engi-neering majors throughout the campus, as well as professional societies, attended this wonderful annual event. The cookout had a wide selection of food ranging from hot dogs to veggie burgers. The cookout even included a wide selection of cookies and drinks from which to choose!
Many professional societies from around IIT demonstrated their engineering abilities through displays of projects they had been working on. AIChE IIT displayed a home-made air conditioner designed from household items and a few other parts found at a local hardware store. The homemade air conditioner consisted of a box fan, copper tubing, vinyl tubing, an aquarium water pump, and a Styrofoam cooler.
Assembling the air conditioner was rather easy. First, the copper tubing was coiled around the front of the box fan. Then, vinyl tubing was attached to the copper tubing at the start and end of the copper coil. Next, the vinyl tubing attached to the start of the copper coil was connected to a small water pump inside the Styrofoam cooler. The vinyl tubing attached to the end of the copper coil was allowed to empty out into the cooler, thus completing the water-flow cycle. The cooler was then filled with about 1 to 2 gallons of water and allowed to run.
The homemade air conditioner at-tracted many fellow engineers. On-lookers stood in front of the air conditioner to cool down from the day‘s hot weather. All in all, the day was a great success for AIChE IIT and the students of the Armour College.

Fall Picnic

AIChE 2009 Fall Picnic

Every semester the IIT chapter of AIChE holds a picnic to bring together chemical engineering students and faculty in a fun and informal setting. This semester was no exception.
The annual AIChE Welcome Back picnic was held on September 4 in ?Man on the Bench? Park. The picnic featured great friends, delicious food, beautiful weather, and finally, a nice new grill. Despite the fact that past grills have ranged from the rusty, old charcoal variety to the small, gas kind missing a wheel and falling apart, the AIChE picnic has persevered. Over the summer, the IIT Student Activities Office got a brand new gas grill for student organizations to use and developed an easy system to keep it intact. The large-sized grill allowed grill-master Jennifer Guilfoyle to cook the burgers, hot dogs, and corn at a faster rate than ever before, creating smiles and satisfied stomachs all around. With a record number of freshmen attending, as well as various professors and department staff, this semester promises to be full of unity and collaboration within AIChE and the ChBE department.

EWI

Evening with Industry
Each fall, the IIT chapter of AIChE is proud to host its Evening with Industry. This event is very excit-ing for both students and local compa-nies. The evening begins with a career fair where students have the chance to learn about opportunities for intern-ships, co-ops, and possible full-time job opportunities. For companies, it is an opportunity not only to find poten-
tial employees that match their needs, but to also continue to make their pres-ence known to our students. Company representatives in attendance get a chance to learn about the students in a more personal manner during the din-ner portion following the career fair.
Finally, students and industry guests have the chance to hear from the keynote speaker of the night—always a
highlight for all attendees. This fall‘s ?Evening with Industry? will be held on October 23 from 6—8 pm. Any company interested in participating should contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for additional information.
